Misericordia Health Centre Foundation Founder Sam Fabro honoured by Winnipeg’s Citizens Hall of Fame
September 18, 2013
Mr. R.A. (Sam) Fabro, founding Chairman of the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation, will be honoured on Saturday September 21 at 10 a.m. with induction to Winnipeg’s Citizens Hall of Fame.As the Foundation celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year, the current board and staff of Misericordia Health Centre and the MHC Foundation would like to congratulate Sam for being recognized with this special tribute.
Sam’s history with Misericordia Health Centre dates back to 1977 when he joined the health centre’s Board of Directors. He went on to Chair the Board from 1983-87 and was a founding member of the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation, which he chaired from 1984-1992.In 1983, certain restrictions were imposed upon hospitals and their ability to access funds to acquire all necessities to provide optimum patient care. A group of Misericordia Hospital (as it was known then) board members and supporters saw the need for a separate entity to raise funds on behalf of the hospital so that it could provide the best patient care possible. The Misericordia General Hospital Foundation (now Misericordia Health Centre Foundation) was incorporated in June 1983. Sam was the first chair of the Foundation board. Other founding directors included Earl Backman, Margaret Edmond, Jerry Kruk, Michael Mercury, Sister Marie Plamondon, Arnold Rogers and Robert Chipman.
Sam’s community-centred initiative certainly doesn’t end with health care. As only a brief sample of his achievements, Sam is a Memorial Cup Champion, past player with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, served as Chair of the 1967 Pan-Am Games Baseball Committee, Past Chair of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, co-originator of the Manitoba Marathon and is a co-founder of the Fort Whyte Centre.
We are grateful to Sam for his leadership in the advancement of Misericordia Health Centre as a key player in the Manitoba health care landscape; for his vision in the co-creation and ongoing guidance of the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation; and, for forever instilling his spirit of achievement within the halls of Misericordia and throughout Manitoba. Congratulations Sam on this truly deserved recognition.
