Meet our special donor: Barbara's Story

10/10/2013

PictureBarbara was a dedicated volunteer and a generous donor who will forever hold a special place in the history of MHC
When Barbara Phyllis McDougall moved from Scotland to Winnipeg, she wanted to get involved with her new community.

She decided to volunteer at Misericordia General Hospital, right in her own neighbourhood. For the next 32 years, Phyllis spent countless hours touching numerous parts of the Hospital. She was an integral part of the Misericordia family.

Phyllis believed deeply in the legacy created by the Misericordia Sisters. She embraced their values of compassion and caring, and wanted to support this important work. When she retired from volunteering, she decided to create her own legacy. Beyond her generous gift of time over the years, she decided to make a financial gift to ensure the future of care at this special place.

Phyllis made a bequest to the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation in her will. She wanted to make sure the health centre could continue the work started by the Misericordia Sisters.

Phyllis’ planned gift will join many others. It will enhance patient care, leaving a lasting legacy through the new buildings and spaces being built here.

While it has changed over the years from a maternity hospital to a community health centre focusing on healthy aging, Misericordia has remained true to its values of caring, respect and trust. Her commitment to these values was reflected in the warmth of her spirit and generosity of heart.

She will be remembered at Misericordia for years to come.

Ladies of the street choir - an annual tradition

10/3/2013

It was a dark December night just before Christmas. As the snow gently fell, you could hear the sounds of laughter at the annual neighbourhood Christmas party. It would end as it always did — with the ladies gathered around the piano singing carols. Laughter and joy and music filled the air – and someone wondered why they only did this at Christmas. Why not meet more regularly to enjoy an evening of song?

And thus, the “Ladies of the Street” choir was born.
Over 15 years, the choir has grown from 6 to 18.  They meet on Sunday evenings and, in addition to a serious singing session, there are always goodies, libations and lots of laughter. As lives and schedules change, so have some of the faces. But the singers are bonded by their love of music and singing. They come from all walks of life, some with young families, others already finished their careers and enjoying retirement. Their conductor Coralie Bryant chooses a wide range of music for the women to learn. Some of it is challenging classical music, others are light and fun pieces.

A few years after they formed the choir, they thought they’d like to share their music in a concert setting. They invited friends and family for an evening of music and merriment. The audience was so inspired that they suggested the ladies could charge for their concert and perhaps raise money for a local charity.

A new tradition began.

Each year at their annual concert, the Ladies choose a local charity to support. This year, they chose Misericordia Health Centre Foundation. In particular, they are directing the money towards the music programs in our Life Enrichment program. The concert was held in the home of Ron and Sandi Mielitz who also provided tours of their gorgeous home garden.

About 100 guests gathered in their home on a hot June evening. A few Misericordia staff members attended to share with the concert-goers how their gifts would impact the lives of people living at Misericordia. Throughout the evening, guests shared stories of relatives who were currently living or had once lived at Misericordia, and how pleased they were that their donations would go toward a program that would provide a deep level of joy. They had all experienced first-hand the importance of music in communicating with their moms and dads, aunts and uncles. They knew the benefits of singing and music for anyone of all ages and abilities. It’s a universal language.

A sincere thank-you to the Ladies of the Street choir, along with their friends and families who raised $6,000 that evening. Their gifts will allow the residents at Misericordia to create their own beautiful music and fill their lives with the beauty of song.

Anyone can host their own fundraiser in support of the causes that mean the most to them. If you are interested in supporting Misericordia Health Centre Foundation please call 204-788-8458 to discuss how your gifts can make a difference here.
