Our compassionate volunteers are an excellent example of how anyone and everyone can do their part to help. The combined efforts of many are an important part of what makes Misericordia the Future of Care.
University of Manitoba student Suzie De Luca is one of our dedicated volunteers. With a grandmother in a nursing home and a mother as a nurse, Suzie has always had a good understanding of how long-term care homes work in a health centre setting. She knew that she wanted to help out and in 2007 she became a part of the Misericordia team. Today, Suzie volunteers as a recreation assistant at Misericordia Place, our long-term care home.
“Everyone at Misericordia is so kind and courteous. You really see that the mottoCaring, Respect, Trust is alive in the people that work here,” Suzie said.
As a recreation assistant, Suzie sets up activities, takes the residents to and from events and helps the residents with anything that they need. Over the years Suzie has gotten to know some of the residents very well and loves to chat with the residents that she has become good friends with.
“I’ve really been enjoying it,” Suzie said. “I know a lot of the residents by name. I’m really comfortable at Misericordia Place.” Among other activities, Suzie has helped the residents with table bowling, attending Folklorama, watching a fashion show, listening to Christmas carollers and quilting.
“Quilting was a great idea because we all gathered around a table to do it… we donated the quilt to Villa Rosa. While we quilted, the residents were reminiscent of quilts and other projects that they’d made in the past. It really promoted community.”
